Backlit

E WIND 5 TO 10 KT WITH GUSTS TO 15 KT MAINLY INNER WATERS. WIND WAVES 1 FOOT. W SWELL 7 FT AT 14 SECONDS.
Drove through heavy downpours in the valley...
To arrive at a sunlit coastline...
Sometimes you get a little lucky...
Paddled out and caught some waves...
Headhigh rights, in early and down the line...
Sometimes you get alot lucky...
Had to leave to take care of some business...
But came back for a look...
And saw some green backlit walls...
Sat in the cold December sunshine...
Drinking a cold beer on the beach...
Sometimes you get super lucky.

Channeling Blackie

NE WIND 10 TO 15 KT...VEERING TO E. WIND WAVES 2 FT. NW SWELL 13 FT AT 11 SECONDS.
When I swing my 10' 6" around onto a backside wall...
I invariably go into a parallel stance ala Blackie Makahena...
I can't claim the classic hot curl arch or the arm positioning...
But I definitely feel the need to square up on rights...

Fruitless

SW WIND 25 TO 30 KT. COMBINED SEAS 10 FT DOMINANT PERIOD 13 SECONDS.

I had to work on the north coast this morning in Gearhart...
Checked a nearby spot to the south before my meeting...
It wasn't really working but looked to improve with the tide...
Checked back and it had improved, just not too much...
There were 3 out front, and 2 down south...
Warbling cylinders swallowed up one taker...
Then a massive clean up wave broke well outside...
Unridden hollow lefts swept through in it's wake...
Burying the surfers scratching for the outside...
Headed south to check a few other places...
But knew there'd likely be little on tap other than visuals...
Small clean righthand peelers inside a jetty setup...
A boat crossing a closed out sketchy bar...
An empty parking lot at Oregon's favorite cove...
Snow in the pass.

Warbly Peeler

NW WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 3 FT. W SWELL 12 FT AT 9 SECONDS.

So this was the shot by Stoner I was thinking of in yesterday's post...
Mick from Safe To Surf was kind enough to set the record straight...
Yesterday's peelers are from a still out of the film Liquid Time...

Don't know for sure...
But think it's a photo by Stoner...
Perfect peeling 4 inchers...
Is my best guess...
Makes me wish I was real small...
Like Tiny Elvis...
Only a surfer.

To Surf Or Not To Surf

N TO NE WIND 10 TO 15 KT. W SWELL 8 FT AT 14 SECONDS.

I wish that was the question…
Sadly, for me…
Not to surf is the answer…
And it is looking pretty solid today…

Yesterday looked pretty good too…
And, yes, I missed it then as well…
I did spy someone I know though…
At least I think it was him…
Sitting way outside at his spot…
Awaiting an approaching wall…

And a final congrats & cartoon…
For Chum at Sissyfish…
On the birth of his baby…
It may affect some DP’s…
But it’s pretty worth it…
I speak from experience…
As I’ve got 2 of them at home…
Well, they're bigger now…
But they were babies once…

Thankful

W WIND 10 TO 15 KT. S WIND 10 KT NEAR SHORE EARLY. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 7 FT AT 17 SECONDS.

This was a difficult week for surfing...
Work was demanding...
Holiday stresses & demands...
East winds with swell...
And no way to escape...
Yesterday I finally got some...
Hit the central coast with high hopes...
And it certainly looked surfable...
But the east wind was hitting hard...
The tide was peaking...
And it was quickly getting crowded...
Checked another spot...
But it was flooded out...
And looked like a tough paddle...
Check another holy spot...
And the wind was howling...
I looked for some shelter and found it...
Heading north out of the wind tunnel...
The flags were slack north of Tillamook...
Even on the open beaches it was calm...
Parking up from Oregon's most popular cove...
I was surprised to find only a few cars...
And quickly headed in to find...
Fun, waist to chest high peaks coming through...
Paddled out to the south side...
Picked off a few lefts there...
Then moved to the empty middle peak...
Surfed it for hours...
Wave after wave after wave...
Easy paddles out...
And long lefts into the shallows.

Float & Bloat

E WIND 15 TO 20 KT WITH GUSTS TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 4 FT. W SWELL 11 FT AT 15 SECONDS.
The swells already dropping offshore...
Looks like there may be a little wind tomorrow...
But hopefully also a solid 8 foot groundswell...
So, today I will bloat...
And tomorrow I'll float...
At least I hope...
Have a good Thanksgiving.

Where's the razor?

North East Wind

N WIND 10 KT...EXCEPT NE NEAR SHORE. WIND WAVES 1 FOOT. W SWELL 8 FT AT 12 SECONDS.

Getting Jobbed

NW WIND 10 TO 15 KT WITH GUSTS TO 20 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 10 FT AT 12 SECONDS.
The waves don't look that good...
And the wind'll be on it anyway...
I keep telling myself...
Wonder if I'll believe it...
Anytime soon...
Some weeks work does get in the way...
And this looks to be one of them...
East winds through the end of the week...
Maybe Friday...

Could hold up for a good week if the wind stays off it...

Coastal Zone

SW WIND 20 TO 25 KT EARLY...RISING TO 30 TO 35 WITH GUSTS UP TO 40 KT. COMBINED SEAS 19 FT DOMINANT PERIOD 14 SECONDS.

I saved this a ways back from a post off the OSP by Speelyei...winter's back in full force, so seemed time to resurrect...enjoy.
The mess in the garage was going nowhere. At this point, I was just shuffling things from one flat spot to another. As I looked out the door to see who was speeding down the street with all the little kids out, I kicked over a 5 gallon bucket full of old sawdust, sheetrock scraps, nails, debris, and other accumulated crap from a half dozen projects. "Fuck it!!", I said, as I knocked into the sawhorse that supported about 12 old spray paint cans (love that ozone!) and went into the house.

Stacked on the counter were enough bills for a lifetime. The Pentagon doesn’t have this much paperwork sitting on its collective counters. The kids were watching Jimmy Neutron. Oh my God, how I hate that show! But, at least they weren't pestering me.

Outside the wind rocks the tree tops and the mist blows through the leaves. Bright green leaves on new growth, the alders put on at least a foot this spring. Rain drips down between the fascia and the back of the gutter. No one put in a flashing strip when they built this house. You can practically hear the rafter tails rotting.

In the house, half finished projects; the bathroom with no sink, no counters, and no walls; the utility room with all the detritus for the oh-so necessary daily ablutions stacked around the 20 gallon wash basin I never bolted firmly to the wall.

Maybe the weather will let up? The rain falls steadily on the deck, the mist obscuring the ridges and clear cuts to the east. Out back, the dogs paw and tear at the soggy ground, shredding a $7 chew-man and crapping out their weight every day into the overgrown lawn.

I step out to fire up the gas grill. Another green 1 lb propane container that will slowly make its way into the landfill, the gutter, the recycling yard, or maybe be a 500 yard target in some clear cut. You're never really free of the trash you consume. I think of all the packaging in different forms that I buy, that I don’t really want. Who do I complain to?

As I fire up the grill I kick into a 10 pound plate from a weight lifting set that is slowly oxidizing and flaking into an orange stain on the untreated deck. A deck that was rotten when I purchased the house; if assuming 100k in debt is really "purchasing". Sliding the weight aside, it clunks with a hollow thud into my surfboard. Now probably bruised through its protective board bag and its petroleum byproduct layers.

I shut the lid on the Weber and go back into the house, sit down on the can and check to see if there’s paper before committing. I pick up a Surfing magazine, a gift subscription from my wife; picked because it was the cheapest and leaf through the ads. Every page is an ad; I look at people I share nothing in common with. Except maybe we're all bipeds. Jon Jon Florence stares back from a Vans ad; cut lip, boxing gloves. The thought that one of my daughters might some day meet someone like this brings out the primal instincts.

I put the magazine down, debating which is more appropriate for wiping…the glossy copy? Or the quilty soft? I’m tough, and some kid from San Diego shoots a curl he would never have imagined. I know it'll flush because I plumbed this John in myself, using oversized ABS. With two little kids the chances of a Pretty Pony or a handball taking the whirlpool to infinity are pretty high.

The sliding glass door slides like a piece of granite across an asphalt road. Through the smeared glass I see the dogs are shredding something paper. Probably a vehicle registration, or maybe an overdraft notice. I see the smoke from the grill wafting up, curling, languid, and serene; carried on the breeze that blows the mist through the alders. As it caresses the board bags in their rack, I think, “The only time those boards get wet is when it rains”.
There's a road sign up ahead…You have entered…The Coastal Zone

S WIND 20 TO 25 KT... BECOMING S 25 TO 35 KT WITH GUSTS TO 40 KT THIS AFTERNOON. COMBINED SEAS 12 FT...BUILDING TO 16 FT LATER THIS AFTERNOON. DOMINANT PERIOD 10 SECONDS.
Yesterday, I made the mistake of packing the thruster rather than the 10'6"...
Kind of silly, really...I mean they both fit in the car?
My perfect timing resulted in hitting the water at a peak low 5 foot at 5 seconds...
Resulting in lots of hopping, wiggling, milking and failing...
Still caught a couple reasonably fun waves...just not many...
But, I think I will follow the example of these surf pioneers...
And keep the really, really big board at hand...just in case.

Forgettable

SE WIND 25 TO 30 KT WITH GUSTS TO 35 KT. COMBINED SEAS 9 FT DOMINANT PERIOD 11 SECONDS.
On the road before dark...
Not for surf though...
Checked the surf...
Looked halfway to ok...
But way smaller than expected...
Had opted for the shortboard...
Based on the supposed swell...
The 10' 6" would have been the call...
Had to head in to work...
Back to the beach at 1...
Not looking too good...
Tide flooding, wind picking up...
But blowing east at least...
Checked spot A, B, C, & D...
A= flooded, blown down...
B= better, but swirly sideshores...
C= howling, peaky, blown...
D= blown to shit...
Settled for spot E...
Some little peaks coming in...
Caught a few marginals...
But mostly paddled out to ge wet...
Headed in to a drizzle...
And sudden gusts of wind...
All in all, E got an F...
Forgettable day for...
Surf in Oregon.

S WIND 20 TO 25 KT...RISING TO 30 TO 35 KT WITH GUSTS TO 45 KT. COMBINED SEAS 13 FT DOMINANT PERIOD 11 SECONDS...BUILDING TO 17 FT DOMINANT PERIOD 12 SECONDS.
I've surfed here...
Always by myself...
And only because I was already there...
Never caught it good...
Don't know if it gets good...
My best story from camping above this beach...
This cape is very, very windy...
We pulled in and picked a campsite...
We chose one in the sun...
Surrounded by a hedge...
As I struggled to pitch the tent...
My wife asked if she could help...
"Yeah...let me pitch the tent..."
Was my grumpy reply...
Once I got the poles in...
The wind was howling...
And I asked my 7 year old son...
To stand in the tent while I got the stakes...
5 steps away I heard "Dad!"...
And saw the tent roll across the site...
While my son stood where the tent had been...
"I told you to stand in the tent!" I scolded...
"I was" he explained in honesty...
I believed him, it was that windy...
Once I got the tent staked in place...
I watched with concern...
As it bent nearly to the ground...
And the seams strained under the pressure...
I was having my doubts...
My wife walked up and said...
"It isn't windy on the othe side of the hill"...
What?! I walked over to see for myself...
Sure enough the wind on the other side...
In the shady forested side was calm as could bee...
We packed up and moved everything there...
And then I went surfing...

Carcharodon

S WIND 5 TO 10 KT...BECOMING SW 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 9 FT AT 13 SECONDS.
This specimin was caught off New Zealand circa 1900...
From the Greek karcharos, which means sharp or jagged...
And odous, which means tooth...
Great white sharks live in almost all coastal and offshore waters...
That have water temps between 54° to 75° F...
Has been found at depths of 4,199 ft...
But most often found close to the surface...
The typical adult measures 13 to 16 feet...
With typical weights of 1,500 to 2,450 pounds...
The females generally larger than males...
Their Ampullae of Lorenzini enables them to detect electromagnetic fields...
Emitted by the movement of living animals...
Clearly, the white shark is a carnivore...
Dieting on fish, pinnipeds, cetaceans & other sharks...
With the accidental unlucky swimmer, diver or surfer tossed in...
An apex predator whose only threat comes from...
Humans and, in one case, Killer Whales...
Great white sharks are ovoviviparous, the eggs developing in the uterus...
Hatching there and continuing to develop until they are born...
Feeding upon unhatched sibling eggs in the womb...
At birth they are perfectly capable predators...
The litters number 8 or 9 for a single delivery...
And the cute babies are toothy 5 footers from the start...
Some estimate that great whites live 30 to 40 years...
How many if her (or his) descendants are out there swimming around?

Kooky Summers

NW WIND 5 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 8 TO 9 FT AT 12 SECONDS.
A few things I miss about summer:
  • Kooky cartop configurations of surfboards
  • Warm, sunny days on the beach
  • Girls in bikinis & summer dresses
  • Kooks with wetsuits on backwards
  • Long days with surf until 10pm
  • Drinking beer & surfing waist high waves
  • Kooks sitting backwards on their soft tops
  • Pushing my kids into little waves
  • Beach fires under starry skies
  • Dodging kooks on waves that don't matter
  • Backlit harmless windswell

A few things I like about fall & winter:

  • Fewer kooks to dodge on the inside
  • The end of prevailing north winds (not this past summer tho!)
  • Less fat people in bathing suits
  • Inability of kooks to get outside
  • Groundswell
  • Drinking beer when it's unsurfable
  • Buying a beginner's board at 1/2 the original cost
  • Seeing spots work that don't all summer
  • Storms spinning in the Gulf of Alaska
  • Helicopter rides for the inept
  • Black, meaty concrete slabs of surf

Veni, Vedi, Drinki

N WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 11 FT AT 13 SECONDS.
I came...
I saw...
I went drinking.
There were waves in the morning but in my post-flu state I could not man up to surf them.
I went to work and then checked a couple spots on the central coast that were mostly blown out and pretty big.
Get Eaten was outta control although a couple guys from Cali were checking it in their boardshorts and marveling at the outside sets.
The Kiddie Pool had two paddlers in it, who stood up in waist deep water everytime a wave came in.
A solitary SUP'er paddled around the corner to hidden break...mystery, intrigue & danger!
Headed back north hoping things might have settled down, but no such luck and my kitten-like strength had me opt for beer on the beach.
Watched a certain Kiwi sitting way out of position for a fairly long while, then I left.
Came back an hour later, said Kiwi still sitting in the same spot, still no waves.
Getting his meditation on? Some sorta southern hemisphere voodoo? Tired?
We may never know, maybe he's still out there.
