I always thought that we, as surfers were “blessed” with this lifestyle. I was discussing this over a few beers with a friend that I surf with a lot. He told me that we weren’t “blessed” but rather we were “cursed”. He said he’d be a rich man if he didn’t surf, that he would be working a lot more than he does.

The bastard got me thinking.

There's plenty of poor non-surfers out there...

And remember Finger...
In the immortal words of Clarence (the Angel, from It's A Wonderful Life)...
"...no man is a failure who surfs."
Or something like that.

I didn't say I believed him there Doc, I just said he got me thinking. He's a friend AND a surfer, so I hardly ever believe what he says-the slacker's full of shit. I do surf with him almost every day, but he might be right.

Are we cursed? How many relationships or jobs or important events have you missed or been affected by because the swell had arrived? I know I've had my share.

Nice post. I'll admit, I've been hooked for a long time. So long, I've given up thinking what I've missed because of surfing. Usually the only thing I miss is getting waves...
