All Time

~source line art Spencer and unknown comic book dude

S WIND 10 KT. WIND WAVES 1 FT. W SWELL 7 FT AT 10 SECONDS.
I don't usually talk to strangers...
It's the way I was brought up...
But as I've gotten older...
I've opened up a little bit...
Even to the point of asking...
The eternal question...
As you walk in to a spot...
To a fellow surfer walking out...
"How is it?"...
Now, I understand...
That a surfboard under arm...
Does not a surfer make...
But this guy had the look...
Nice board, hoodie, beard...
But when he opened his mouth...
I knew it was not to be...
"Oh Dude! It's all time Bro"...
I consider myself a fair judge...
Of sarcasm and wit...
And had he sported...
An ironic Trucker Hat...
Then maybe, just maybe...
It was all in jest...
But it wasn't...
In jest or all time...
Bro.

If Duke Surfed In Oregon

N WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 6 FT AT 11 SECONDS.
Duke surfed down under...
And Cali and a few other places...
He never surfed in Oregon...
If he had had a chance...
This would likely have been...
His pre-surf garb...
Maybe no tie, brah.

NE WIND 5 TO 10 KT...BECOMING SE. WIND WAVES 1 FOOT. W SWELL 5 FT AT 10 SECONDS.

Mind Surf

E WIND 5 TO 10 KT. WIND WAVES 1 FOOT. W SWELL 7 FT AT 13 SECONDS.
The shot's from a non-surf day a couple weeks back...
Coulda gone but opted not to...
Sat on a bluff after checking a few options...
All pretty much unworkable...
For one reason or another...
The wave above was a pretty solid swell...
As I sat on the cliff looking down...
The ground shook as each wave hit land...
Don't recall the exact size & period...
But I think it was in the 12 to 15 foot range...
With a fairly short period...
That never, never let up...
A good day for mind surfing.

Gotta Go

E WIND 5 TO 10 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 8 FT AT 16 SECONDS.
On some levels 8 foot at 16 seconds...
Is far more appealing health-wise...
Than 10 foot at 18 seconds...
And certainly a seachange...
From the recent loggables.

Longboards are the call.

Alaia

S WIND 10 TO 15 KT RISING TO 20 TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 3 FT BUILDING TO 5 FT. W SWELL 9 FT AT 11 SECONDS.
Aside from surfing styrofoam versions as a kid...
I think we bought them for pennies at Thriftys...
And they were pretty much guaranteed to snap...
And we weren't really surfing them anyway...
I haven't had the chance to try an alaia style board...
Speelyei's wooden behemoth doesn't really fall in the category...
At least from what I can tell from the previous pics...
But I have to admit that between Wegener's advocacy...
Musica Surfica and other alaia riding buzz...
I am thinking that 2009 will be the year to give it a go...
Some Tom Wegener comments on the Alaia:

How it works:

The thin, flat rockered board moves across the wave very quickly. The hard edge of the rail bites into the wave like a long fin and the gentle curves on the bottom hold the board into the face of the wave. The board is as light as possible so it accelerates quickly and the wood is sealed with oil which is slippery in the water. This makes the board move faster through the water like a fish.
The thin board flexes as you ride the wave. When in trim or when catching the wave, you push down on the nose giving the board a reverse rocker. This makes the board go faster. When turning you pull up on the nose making the board flex the other way. This makes the board turn quicker and then bounce out of the turn as it comes back to its natural shape. The right combination of flex, thickness, hard edge on the rail and the oiled surface makes for a very light, lively surfboard.

How to surf:

The Lala. The ancient Hawaiians had a special word for how to surf the alaia. It was “lala.”. It is the controlled slide in the pocket. The way you do it is you use the edge of the board to hold in across a wall, then break free for a controlled sideways slide in the pocket, then grab the wave again to gain forward momentum. When you want to continue with forward momentum, you put weight on the inside rail and the board grips the wave and takes off again.

Getting There

SW WIND 30 TO 40 KT. COMBINED SEAS 18 FT DOMINANT PERIOD 12 SECONDS.
A helicopter ride might be the only way to get there...
Of course, getting to the helicopter could be a problem...
Had planned to head down tomorrow...
I would have brought boards despite the odds...
But a friend's report of water up to the hood...
Gave me pause...
Almost as much as the weekend's forecast...
Sometimes timing is everything.

SW WIND 25 TO 30 KT...WITH GUSTS TO 35 KT. COMBINED SEAS 15 FT...BUILDING TO 19 FT AFTER MIDNIGHT. DOMINANT PERIOD 13 SECONDS.
I'm not much of a Hooter...
And I don't get into the Pit...
As often as I would like...
But I do get quite a bit...
Of Paddling in on occasion.

S WIND 35 TO 40 KT WITH GUSTS TO 45 KT. COMBINED SEAS 10 FT DOMINANT PERIOD 10 SECONDS...BUILDING TO 16 FT DOMINANT PERIOD 9 SECONDS.
Had I opted to attempt a go out last week...
This would have been my likely greeting...
This week looks like more of the same...
Combined Seas, Gusting Winds...
Dominant Periods, Ass Kickings...
I will head out and take a look...
But have a feeling the boards will stay dry.
