Selective Hearing

N WIND 5 TO 10 KNOTS. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 5 FT AT 16 SECONDS.

Looks to be a fun day for Surf In Oregon.
Normally I'd burn a sick day for 5 @ 16 in March.
Instead I actually have to use it.
Getting a CESI...cervical epidural steroid injection.
Good times but hopefully back in the water next week.

It's Over

W WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 7 FT AT 16 SECONDS.
CHANCE OF SHOWERS.

It's looking like this run of sun...
Is coming to an end...
West winds and rain...
Coming to harsh my mellow.

Rod Surfling

E WIND 5 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 1 FOOT. W SWELL 4 FT AT 12 SECONDS.

Never mind the:
SLIGHT CHANCE OF RAIN OR LIGHT FREEZING RAIN.
I always ignore that shit...
'Course the roll over accidents sometimes give pause.

Regulating

NE WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 3 FT. W SWELL 10 FT AT 12 SECONDS.

Not trying to make light of anyone getting hurt...
But the real regulator of Tillamook Head showed up Thursday...

Surfers injured at Seaside Cove

Seaside volunteer firefighters responded to two calls to assist injured surfers at the Cove on Thursday. Both surfers were injured near Tillamook Head, where waves were especially high.

At 9:38 a.m., paramedics contacted a surfer at Tillamook Head who had apparently dislocated his shoulder. However, the surfer refused treatment.

At 11:13 a.m., paramedics again responded to a report of an injured surfer. They encountered several surfers carrying out another surfer along the Tillamook Head trail. The surfer apparently had been knocked against some rocks. He was entered into the county's trauma system and transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital.

Metaphor

SW WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 10 FT AT 11 SECONDS.

I watched Big Wednesday the other day...
For the first time in many, many years...
There was a frame where Gerry is headed out...
And a guy with an eye patch is hanging...
Obvious reference to O'Neill of course...
But still nothing I ever noticed before...

For me, she represents work, toil and labor...
Because they are getting in the way of surf...
Or maybe she is wind, storm and rain...
Because they are getting in the way of surf...
Or maybe she is the internet, cams & reports...
Because they are getting in the way of surf...
Or maybe she is giant surf, alcohol and gas prices...
Because they are getting in the way of surf...
Or maybe she is just a cartoon.

Trouble Alot

NW WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. NW SWELL 5 FT AT 7 SECONDS.

There's a reason I don't bring my wife to the beach much...
She doesn't surf...
And she doesn't have the same concept of time...
Especially surf time...
I once made the mistake of leaving her with a newborn...
For a mere four hours...
She seemed mad when I came in and it was still good...
Still get reminded of that one...
I tell her that I'll only be out for a bit...
And I mean it...
It's just that time is relative...
Especially if the waves are good.

Best Laid Plans

N WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. NW SWELL 2 FT AT 6 SECONDS.

Often go astray...
Yesterday I saw a bump...
This infernal 2 foot swell...
Supposedly was jumping to 4...
Of course it didn't happen...
But that's another story...
Anyway, I knew it was gonna be hot...
So I packed up last night...
And I knew it was gonna be small...
So I packed a really long board...
And I knew it might be too small...
So I packed a fishing pole & tackle...
Figured I'd at least get wet...
Surf if possible and fish off the board if not...
Got up early, coffee'd up...
Get in the car and start 'er up...
Squealing noises & smoke out the vents...
Quick inspection of the engine...
I know how to open the hood...
But that is the extent of my mechanical skills...
Call my mechanic, he's in early...
"Bring it in I'll take a look"...
I start it up, the squealing & smoke is gone...
But no power steering, just turn wrasslin'...
Get it there, high hopes of a quick fix...
No such luck...
Stuck deep in the valley...
Sweaty and pissed and no car...
No surfy for me til Monday...
At least the swell's supposed to bump by then.

Sell Out

W WIND 5 KT. WIND WAVES 1 FOOT. W SWELL 5 FT AT 13 SECONDS.
I haven't caught too much flak for hawking the TSJ...
But I'll admit I had my reservations initially...
I mean, how can I sully the pureness of my surf blog experience...
With blatant advertisements promoting magazine sales?
Then I saw that I was only a nickel short of 3 bucks...
I'm all in baby...
Bring it on...
Diet pills, Viagra, whatever it takes...
Hell, I'm only a dollar shy of a 6 pak of High Life!

No Leashes

N WIND 10 TO 15 KT. GUSTS UP TO 20 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 3 FT AT 7 SECONDS.
I'm sorry...
After a week of weak swell...
Waist to knee high surf mostly...
Still longboarders strapping 'em on...
a) it encourages kookiness, falling & flailing...
b) it negatively affects wave selection...
c) if it's small & you fall, you should swim...
d) all of the above & more...
Also, extreme yoga-like stretching, c'mon...
Anyway, it was perfect leashless surf...
Leave that thing on the beach...
Learn how to hang on to your board...
And don't take off on unmakeable waves...
Yelling "GOT IT!" when you don't...
And relying on your leash to save you a swim...
That's just like my opinion, man.

Far Side

NW WIND 5 TO 10 KT...RISING TO 10 TO 15 KT IN THE AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 4 FT AT 8 SECONDS.
Beautiful day at the beach.
For some reason...
This shot of the "Epicenter"...
With all 3 boards sticking out of the water...
Reminds me of a Far Side comic...
You can insert your own caption.

Surf Scars

S WIND 25 TO 30 KT. GUSTS UP TO 40 KT. COMBINED SEAS 11 FT DOMINANT PERIOD 8 SECONDS.

I'm not saying it doesn't/hasn't worked...
But a good surf scar is a great icebreaker...
Shark bites are even better.

Looks Like Ass

W WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 8 FT AT 10 SECONDS.
Still...
May head down tomorrow...
To confirm the visual evidence...
North winds please...
Or South...
(I know East winds is too much to ask)...
Just not West...
And enough with the 40 knot gusts.

NW WIND HOWLING. COMBINED SEAS 7 TO 8 FT DOMINANT PERIOD 7 SECONDS...IT WAS SMALL...3 FT, MAYBE 4 FT.

Grow up to be surfers...
They'll do things like...
Spending Earth Day...
Driving 100's of miles...
Looking for surf...
On a blown out coastline...
And then find it.

Naturally, as we get closer...
Reality takes hold...
West wind...
Onshore...
Blow Me Down.

Rad Duck Dive

N WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 7 FT AT 11 SECONDS...SUBSIDING TO 5 FT AT 11 SECONDS IN THE AFTERNOON.
It was alot bigger yesterday...
Well overhead on the sets...
A lot of water moving around...
It was pretty messy at high tide...
And as the tide dropped...
The wind started to wail...
But then it laid off...
And it seemed surfable...
My first scratch to the outside...
Left me way outside...
Courtesy of a major rip...
Paddled back in for wave one...
A backside over the falls thrashing...
It got better from there...
But I got intermittently...
Bored, then terrorized...
Scratching for outside bombs...
Every 20-30 minutes...
So I moved inside...
And surfed the inbetweeners...
Which were still big...
Wedgy and dumping...
Alot of duck diving was involved...
Which is a funny thing...
Usually you get better with practice...
But with alot of duck diving...
I think I get careless...
The first 50 or so were perfect...
But as the duck dive fest went on...
I became more lackadaisical in my efforts...
And paid the price on a couple occassions.

No Fool

NW WIND 20 KT. WIND WAVES 5 FT. NW 9FT AT 9 SECONDS.
I actually got a call this morning...
"Hey! Surf's Up! It looks pretty good."
I thanked them for the info and hung up...
I would add that they don't surf...
I called another friend that does...
"How's it looking?" I asked...
"Terrible" was the answer.
